Northern part of Malaysia is on a massive transformation plan.

The Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) project will see the transformation of Penang into a modern, vibrant city and a major logistics and transportation hub.

Malaysia's PM, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who unveiled a list of projects for the state under the NCER initiative here yesterday, said they would turn Penang into the “Gateway to the Northern Corridor”.

With price tags reaching billions, the projects are not only concentrated on the eastern portion of the island but also in the more rural south-west district and in Seberang Prai.

Here is a summary of the projects:

  • Penang Sentral integrated transport hub
  • Penang Global City Centre
  • Second Penang Bridge
  • Pulau Jerejak premier medical tourism centre
  • Penang-Butterworth fast ferry
  • Penang Port expansion
  • Bayan Lepas Airport expansion
  • Penang Monorail
  • Swettenham Pier redevelopment
  • Micro-Electronics Centre of Excellence
  • Hospitality college
  • Khazanah Nasional Bhd regional office
  • THERE is little doubt that Penang is about to be transformed, thanks to the projects lined up under the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) initiative. This will surely boost the economy for northern side of Malaysia especially Penang Island.

The Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) is seen as a long-term initiative to tap the existing potential in the northern states of the peninsula and to narrow the difference in development that has taken place throughout the country. Some RM177bil in investments are expected to be generated up to 2025 with the Malaysian Government spending a third of that amount a million new jobs are expected to be created by 2018.

The NCER showed that the Ninth Malaysia Plan, which contained the Government's plans for growth corridors, was being implemented and for the people, the NCER brought with it the expectation of more development.

So does this development will have an impact in our life. Surely it will and we will see how it goes. For businesses surely will have a great impact and surely online business will also grow. Cheers and hope Malaysia will also better it's broadband capability to cater for the new businesses.
